Buying guide
A solitaire puts all the attention on the center stone. Milgrain adds texture without adding more large stones, so the ring stays simple but looks finished. It suits a classic round or oval center as well as an elongated pear or marquise, where the beaded edge follows the shape.
Most settings add a pavé band of small lab-grown diamond accents, which keeps the single-stone look while adding sparkle on the shank. Some have engraved or scrollwork bands, and a few use floral details, filigree, a twisted band or a hidden halo under the center. A milgrain frame around the head or a milgrain bezel is another option on some designs.
Every setting can hold a fancy blue, yellow, pink or green center, and some are made for a black center. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and platinum holds fine milgrain well over time. Prices are for the setting only, from under $200 and mostly between about $650 and $1,150; the center is priced when you choose it.
