Buying guide

About the peridot in these studs

Each stud holds natural, treated peridot, the yellow-green gem that is the birthstone for August. Its color runs from lime to olive green, and it looks lively against yellow gold and crisp against white metals. Peridot rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. That is fine for earrings, which take far fewer knocks than rings, so these studs work for daily wear.

Choosing shape and size

Round and cushion studs give the classic button look. Oval, pear and marquise stretch the stone and look a little larger for their weight, while princess and emerald shapes give clean corners. Heart studs make a playful gift. Carat options run from 0.5 to 10 carats total weight for the pair, from a small everyday stud to a bold statement size.

Metal, price and care

Yellow gold, in 10K, 14K or 18K, warms the green; white gold, platinum and silver keep it cool and bright, and rose gold gives a softer contrast. Prices start under $200 at the smallest size and metal. To clean the studs, rinse them in warm, soapy water, and store them apart from harder stones that could scratch them.
