Buying guide

What a lab-grown emerald is

A lab-grown emerald is the same green beryl as a mined emerald, with the same chemistry and color, grown under controlled conditions instead of in the ground. Natural emeralds almost always carry visible inclusions, often filled to improve their look. A lab-grown emerald is usually cleaner, and it costs far less than a natural emerald of the same size. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, it is hard enough for everyday earrings.

Choosing a shape and size

The stud comes in eight shapes. The emerald cut, with its long, stepped facets, is the classic shape for this stone and shows off its deep green. Round and cushion look soft and bright at the ear; oval, pear and marquise look longer and slimmer; princess and heart add a crisper outline. Carat options run from 0.5 to 10 carats total weight for the pair, so the same earring works as a small everyday stud or a bold statement piece.

The basket setting and metals

A basket setting holds the lab-grown emerald in prongs joined by a small gallery underneath, so the stone sits securely and close to the lobe. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold; yellow gold warms the green, while white gold and platinum keep it cool and crisp. Platinum and Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver, are also offered. Prices start under $200, and a typical pair is around $400.

Lab-Grown Emerald Earrings FAQs

How much do real emerald earrings cost?

It depends on the stone's origin and size. Our lab-grown emerald studs start under $200, and a typical pair is around $400, with the price rising with carat weight and metal. A lab-grown emerald is real beryl with the same chemistry and color as a mined emerald, and it costs far less than a natural emerald of the same size. Lab-grown gems have little resale value, so buy them to wear, not as an investment.

Are emeralds good for earrings?

Yes. Natural and lab-grown emeralds rate 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, and earrings take far fewer knocks than rings, so they are one of the best ways to wear the stone every day. A lab-grown emerald is usually cleaner than a natural one, which helps it hold up. A basket setting like the one on our solitaire studs protects the stone's edges while letting light through.
