Buying guide

What a lab-grown ruby is

A lab-grown ruby is the same corundum crystal as a mined one, with the same, hardness and red color, grown under controlled conditions. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is harder than nearly every gem, so these lab-grown ruby studs stand up well to daily wear. Lab-grown rubies are usually cleaner and more evenly colored than natural rubies, at a much lower price.

Choosing shape, size and metal

Round and cushion studs look classic and balanced. Oval, pear and marquise read longer on the ear, and heart and emerald cut make a more distinct statement. The basket setting lifts each stone and lets light in from the sides. For everyday lab-grown ruby ear studs, 0.5 to 1 carat total weight stays discreet; 2 carats and up reads clearly from across a room. Yellow and rose gold warm the red, while white gold, platinum and silver make it look brighter and cooler.

Gold karat and price

Gold earrings come in 10K, 14K or 18K. 14K is a good balance of color and wear; 18K has a richer tone. Prices start under $200 at the smallest size, and most metal choices start at about $400. A larger total weight or platinum raises the price.

Lab-Grown Ruby Earrings FAQs

How much do ruby earrings cost?

Lab-grown ruby earrings here start under $200, and most start at about $400 at the smallest size, rising with total carat weight and metal. Natural rubies of similar color and clarity cost far more. Like most jewelry, lab-grown ruby earrings have little resale value, so choose them to wear and enjoy rather than as an investment.
