Buying guide
A rope twist braids two thin strands of metal into a textured line. A ribbon or crossover twist lets two strands sweep around each other and meet under the center. Some settings add infinity loops, floral shoulders, milgrain beading or a vintage scroll, and a few open into a twisted split shank or a bypass. The twist catches light along its curves, so even a plain metal band has movement.
Most settings set lab-grown diamond accents along one or both strands for sparkle that follows the twist. A plain twist keeps the focus on the center and is easier to polish. Band widths on the slimmer settings run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm. A slim twist suits a smaller center; a wider ribbon twist balances a larger one.
Each setting takes round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, radiant, Asscher, pear, marquise or heart centers, plus fancy blue, pink, yellow or green centers; some settings also take a black center. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow and rose gold show the twist's texture most, and white gold and platinum give a cooler, brighter line. Settings start under $250, and most cost about $750 to $1,200. That price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
