Buying guide
A split shank band starts as one piece at the back of the finger and opens into two strands near the center. The gap widens the ring's top without making it heavy, frames the center, and helps a larger stone look balanced. A split shank solitaire ring keeps that frame simple: one center, no halo, with the split doing the work.
Plain strands give a clean, polished outline. Many settings set lab-grown diamond accents along the strands for more sparkle, and some use graduated rows that grow toward the center. A few twist the two strands together, loop them, or cross them in a bypass. Others pair the split with a bezel or cathedral head, and a few add engraved and floral vintage detail. Band widths run from about 1.8 to 2.8 mm.
Each setting takes round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, radiant, Asscher, pear, marquise or heart centers. You can also choose a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some settings are offered for a black center. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Settings start under $250, and most cost about $800 to $1,100. That price covers the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it in the next step.
