Vintage split shank engagement rings combine a band that divides near the center with details from older jewelry: milgrain edges, filigree, engraving and pave. Most settings frame the center with a halo. Every setting comes in white, yellow or rose gold, platinum, or Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver, and in round, oval, cushion and other center shapes. You choose the center in the next step.

Buying guide
Every setting lines its split strands with lab-grown diamond accents. Milgrain, a row of tiny metal beads along the edges, appears on most of them, and some add filigree lacework under the center, engraved sides or a floral touch. A channel-set halo, a bypass split and a three stone head round out the range.
A halo is a ring of small stones around the center. It makes the top of the ring look larger and rounder, much like older cluster rings. The split shank carries that width down the band, so the halo does not look top-heavy. A cushion center with a milgrain halo is the most traditional vintage pairing; oval and round also work well.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow and rose gold give a warm, antique tone; white gold and platinum keep the look crisp. Most settings also take a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some a black one. Settings start under $350, and most cost about $950 to $1,150. That price covers the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
