Buying guide
A bezel is a thin band of metal that circles the center stone and holds it all the way around, in place of prongs. It protects the edges of the stone, keeps it low and secure, and has no tips to catch on sweaters or gloves. Because the metal frames the stone, a bezel also makes the center look a little larger and gives the ring a clean outline that suits everyday wear.
An antique bezel engagement ring draws on the look of older jewelry. Nearly every setting here has milgrain, the tiny row of metal beads along the edges. Many add pavé lab-grown diamond accents on the band, and some surround the bezel with a halo. You will also find filigree openwork, engraved bands, cluster shoulders and bezel-set side accents in a few designs. A plain solitaire bezel feels quieter; a halo or beaded frame reads more art deco.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, in white, yellow or rose. Yellow and rose gold lean warm and old-world, while white gold and platinum give the bezel a bright, crisp edge. Silver is the lightest on the budget. Settings start under $250, and most are between about $650 and $1,300. That price covers the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
