Buying guide
A bezel is a thin wall of metal that wraps the edge of the center stone instead of holding it with prongs. It protects the girdle from chips, has nothing to catch on clothing, and gives the stone a clean outline. A bypass shank splits so the two ends pass alongside each other rather than meeting head on, which gives the ring a sense of movement. Together, the bezel-set center sits inside a gentle swirl of metal and accents.
The setting is made for round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, radiant, Asscher, marquise, pear and heart centers. A bezel follows the shape exactly, so pointed shapes such as pear and marquise get extra protection at their tips. Center options include fancy colors such as pink, blue, yellow, green and black, which pick up an even bolder look inside a solid rim of metal.
Platinum and white gold make the bezel almost disappear around a colorless center, while yellow and rose gold frame the stone in a warm line. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and band widths run from 2 to 2.5 mm. Prices are for the setting only and start at about $1,050; many options are around $3,150. Your center is priced when you choose it.
