Buying guide

What a cathedral setting is

In a solitaire engagement ring with a cathedral setting, the band rises in two arches to meet the head that holds the center. The arches lift the stone, give the prongs a strong base and add shape when the ring is seen from the side. A cathedral setting solitaire ring also leaves room for a straight wedding band to sit close beneath it on most designs.

Plain, pavé or vintage

  • Plain and tapered bands: the classic look, with open, split or slim shoulders that keep the focus on the center.
  • Pavé shoulders: some designs add lab-grown diamond accents along the arches, and a few use graduated pavé that grows toward the center.
  • Channel set: a few designs hold the accents in a metal channel for a smooth band.
  • Vintage and engraved: a few designs add engraving, filigree or floral detail.

Centers, metals and price

Almost every setting takes round, oval, cushion, pear, marquise, emerald, princess, radiant, heart and Asscher centers, and most also offer fancy blue, pink, yellow and green centers, with black on a few. Settings start under $200, and most are between about $850 and $1,150. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
