Buying guide

Why split the shank

A split shank band separates into two strands as it nears the center. This widens the top of the ring, which makes the center look larger and gives it a sturdier base, while the back of the band stays slim and comfortable. The gap between the strands also lets light reach the sides of the setting.

Channel set accents on a split band

Channel setting holds small lab-grown diamond accents in a groove between two metal walls, with no prongs between them. On a split shank, each strand can carry its own channel, so the sparkle follows the band as it opens toward the center. The smooth walls protect the stones and catch less on clothing than raised prongs.

Halo or bypass

A halo style frames the center with lab-grown diamond accents and adds pavé, milgrain and filigree for a vintage look. A bypass style keeps the center as a solitaire while the split band sweeps past it from each side. The settings take round, oval, cushion, pear, marquise, emerald, princess, radiant, Asscher and heart centers, with fancy blue, pink, yellow and green centers also on offer. Settings start under $300, and most are between about $800 and $2,200. Prices are for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
