Buying guide
A plain split shank runs two straight strands up to the head. When the strands twist, they cross and recross, so the band shows movement and texture from every angle. The pave set along the strands follows each turn and adds sparkle down the sides of the finger.
Some settings keep a solitaire center so the twist stays the main detail. Others add more: a halo around the center, an infinity loop with pave ribbons, a graduated row, or a three stone head with a pave twist band. Band widths run from about 2 to 2.5 mm where listed. A twisted band has more edges than a plain one, so it is worth a gentle clean now and then to keep the pave bright.
Each setting takes round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, radiant, Asscher, pear, marquise or heart centers, plus fancy blue, pink, yellow or green; some also take a black center. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Settings start under $400, and most cost about $1,100 to $1,500. That price covers the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
