Buying guide

Why pave suits a radiant cut

A radiant cut has many facets and trimmed corners, so it gives off a lot of sparkle. A pave band continues that sparkle down the finger. Small stones sit close together, held by tiny beads or prongs, and micro pave uses even smaller stones for a finer, smoother line. Some designs use one row, others two or three, and some graduate the stones toward the center.

Choosing a radiant micro pave style

  • Pave solitaire: one center on a pave band, the simplest look.
  • Halo or hidden halo: accents around or under the center add brightness and make it look larger.
  • Split shank, twisted or bypass: the band divides, twists or wraps toward the center.
  • Three stone and side stones: extra stones flank the center, some in marquise, pear or baguette shapes.

Most designs can also be made for a fancy blue, yellow, pink or green center, and some for black. A few toi et moi designs pair two stones side by side.

Choosing a metal

Every design comes in white, yellow or rose gold in 10K, 14K or 18K, nearly all in platinum, and every design and in Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver. White gold and platinum suit colorless and blue centers, yellow gold warms the look, and rose gold softens it. Platinum is dense and wears slowly; silver is the lowest-priced choice. Settings start under $200, and most are between about $750 and $1,150. The price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
