Buying guide
The cushion cut grew from the old mine cut of the 1800s, a squarish stone with rounded corners and large facets cut to catch candlelight. That history is why an antique cushion cut engagement ring feels at home with old-style metalwork. Today's cushion keeps the soft outline with more modern faceting, so a vintage setting gives you the period look with a brighter center.
Many designs also carry a halo or a pavé band of lab-grown diamond accents, and some use a bezel for an Art Deco look.
Yellow and rose gold suit the antique look, while platinum and white gold give a cooler, Edwardian feel. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Most settings are drawn for a colorless center or a fancy blue, yellow, pink or green one. Prices are for the setting alone and start under $200; most settings are between about $700 and $1,200. The center is priced when you choose it.
