What makes a ring look vintage

Vintage round engagement rings borrow details from older jewelry. Milgrain, a row of tiny metal beads along an edge, appears on most designs here. Filigree uses fine openwork metal, and engraving adds patterns along the band. Lab-grown diamond pave accents and halos are common, often with a beaded or double milgrain frame. These details give new rings an antique look without the wear of an old piece.

Antique and art deco styles

  • Halo: a frame of lab-grown diamond accents around the round center, the most common style here.
  • Art deco: geometric lines, side panels and step patterns, a classic match for an art deco round ring.
  • Solitaire: one center on a detailed band with milgrain or engraving.
  • Bezel and cluster: metal rims and small groups of accents that echo antique settings.

Metal and price

Antique ring settings for round diamonds often look most period-correct in yellow or rose gold, while white gold and platinum suit an art deco look. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and silver keeps the cost lowest. Fine milgrain and filigree soften slowly with wear, so platinum or 14K and 18K gold hold detail well. Most designs can also be ordered for a fancy blue, yellow, pink or green center. Settings start under $200, and most are between about $740 and $1,200, for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
