Buying guide
A pear is rounded at one end and pointed at the other. Set beside a round center, the pears usually turn their points outward or curve in toward the center, which draws the eye to the middle stone and makes the ring look wider across the finger. Because a round center has no corners, the soft curves of the pears follow its outline closely.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K on every design. Platinum is the heaviest and most hard-wearing metal, and silver is the most affordable. Most designs can be set for a fancy blue, green, yellow or pink center, and some for a black center, which contrasts sharply with the side stones. Settings start from about $300, and most are between about $700 and $900, for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
