Buying guide
Most designs trim their edges with milgrain, a line of tiny metal beads. Others add filigree under the center, engraved leaf or swirl work on the band, or a frame of lab-grown diamonds in a halo, milgrain frame or hidden halo. For a cleaner line, the engraved and milgrain solitaires let the lab-grown sapphire stand alone. Pave lab-grown diamonds run along many of the bands, and a few designs use bezel-set accents or a split shank.
Lab-grown blue sapphire is the traditional pick for a vintage ring in yellow gold and gives the strongest contrast. Pink looks soft and romantic against the warm metal, and lab-grown yellow sapphire makes a bright, golden ring. Each is lab-grown corundum, like natural sapphire, with a Mohs hardness of 9. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Where a band width is listed, it runs about 1.8 to 2.5 mm.
Every ring comes in 10K, 14K or 18K yellow gold. 10K is the hardest and palest of the three, 18K has the deepest yellow and is a little softer, and 14K sits between them. Prices start under $750, and most rings fall between about $900 and $1,100.
