Buying guide
Four- and six-prong basket studs hold the lab-grown diamond high so light enters from the sides, which gives the most sparkle. A beaded crown or claw prongs change the look of the head while keeping the stone open. Bezel studs circle the stone in white gold for a sleek, protected edge that won't catch on hair or clothing. Some studs add a hexagon, square or starburst frame, and some come with screw backs.
The carat weight is the total weight of both studs together, so a 1 carat pair holds about half a carat in each ear. Most designs offer 0.5 and 1 carat total weight, and many continue from 2 up to 10 carats total weight. Lab-grown diamonds cost far less than natural diamonds of the same size, so larger studs are within reach.
Most designs let you choose the grade, such as E–F or F–G color and VVS–VS or VS–SI clarity, and some offer single grades from D to G and VVS2 to VS2. Prices start under $300, and most pairs start at about $450 to $480 at their smallest weight.
