Buying guide

Solitaire, bezel, halo or cluster studs

A solitaire stud holds one lab-grown diamond in prongs or a basket, so the stone shows from every side. Bezel studs wrap the stone in a thin rim of white gold: smooth, secure and easy to wear every day. Halo studs ring the center with small lab-grown diamonds, which makes the stud look larger on the ear. Cluster and floral studs group several stones into one shape, such as a flower, a leaf spray or a small bar, and are among the most common styles in this collection.

Choosing the shape and size

Round is the most common shape here and gives the most sparkle for its size. Emerald, oval, pear, marquise and princess cuts appear in some designs and give the stud a more distinct outline. Where a design offers a carat choice, the figure is the total weight of the lab-grown diamonds in the pair: many designs offer 1 to 10 carats total weight, and some small studs start from 0.05 carat. For a small, everyday stud, a lower total weight sits neatly; for evenings, a larger halo or cluster reads from across the room.

10K, 14K or 18K white gold

All three karats are white gold. 14K white gold stud earrings are the usual balance of strength and gold content, 10K is the hardest and most affordable, and 18K holds the most gold. White gold is usually plated with rhodium for its bright white color, and replating every few years keeps it that way. Prices start under $200, and most pairs fall between about $450 and $700.
