Buying guide
Filigree is fine openwork made of curls and scrolls of metal, a hallmark of antique and Edwardian rings. On these settings it shows up as scroll bands, an accented basket under the center or lacy shoulders. Because the metal is open, light passes through the sides of the ring. Many designs add milgrain beading along the edges and pavé lab-grown diamond accents.
Platinum is a dense, naturally white metal, so it doesn't need plating to stay white and it holds prongs securely. Over time it develops a soft satin look, which can be polished back to a shine.
Openwork has thin sections, so a strong, dense metal helps it keep its shape with daily wear.
Nearly every design takes a round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, radiant, asscher, pear, marquise and heart center. Most designs can be ordered for a white, fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some for a black center. Settings start from about $1,200, and most are between about $1,600 and $2,100. That is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
