Pear tension rings hold a pear-shaped center between the ends of the band, so the stone looks suspended above the finger. Some are clean solitaires and some add a bezel rim around the center. Every setting comes in white, yellow or rose gold, platinum, or Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver. You choose the center in the next step.

Buying guide
A tension-style ring grips the center from the sides instead of wrapping it in a ring of prongs. With a pear, the rounded end and the point sit along the length of the finger, and open space around the stone lets light in from the sides. The look is modern and spare, with very little metal over the stone. Where a design adds a bezel, a thin rim of metal frames the edge of the pear and gives the point extra cover.
Every design is made for a colorless center or a fancy color: yellow, blue, pink or green, and most also work with a black center. A dark or saturated center stands out strongly against the open sides of a tension-style band, while a colorless pear shows the most sparkle. The center is chosen and priced in the next step, after you pick the setting.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Platinum is dense and naturally white, a good match for a band that has to hold its shape around the stone. Silver keeps the cost lowest, with settings from under $400, while most gold and platinum settings run between about $1,250 and $1,550. These prices are for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it. Wear any open-sided ring with some care, and take it off for heavy work or sports.
