A tension-style setting grips the center from the sides, where the band's open ends meet the stone, with little metal above or below it. More light reaches the center, and the ring has a sleek, modern profile. Because the stone sits between the ends of the band, the band is built thicker than on a prong solitaire.
Every setting takes a fancy-color center in yellow, blue, pink or green, and some also take a black center.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Platinum is dense and holds its shape well, and white gold gives a similar look for less. Prices start under $400, and most settings fall between about $1,250 and $1,550. That price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it in the next step.
