Some designs form a flower around the center, with a halo of lab-grown diamond petals or a star-shaped floral halo. Others keep the lab-grown sapphire as a solitaire and carry the nature theme into the band, with leaf motifs, curling vines, bypass shanks that wrap around the center, or a twisted band. A few add filigree, engraving or a hidden halo under the center. A lab-grown sapphire has the same chemistry, crystal structure and hardness as a natural sapphire. It rates 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond, so it stands up well to daily wear on the hand. Lab-grown sapphire costs far less than a natural sapphire of similar size and color, and its color is even from stone to stone.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Yellow and rose gold suit the softer, garden look of a leaf or vine band, while platinum and white gold make blue lab-grown sapphire look cooler and crisper. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K.
