In a bypass ring, the band does not meet in a straight line under the center. Its two ends pass each other and curve around the stone from opposite sides. With a heart-shaped center, that sweep follows the rounded lobes and point of the heart and gives the ring a sense of movement. It also sets the center slightly off a straight line, which suits an unusual shape.
Most designs also offer fancy yellow, pink, blue and green centers, and some take a black center.
Every design comes in white, yellow or rose gold in 10K, 14K or 18K, platinum, or silver. A heart center needs prongs at its point and lobes, so look for a setting that protects the point.
