Buying guide
Vintage and antique heart rings borrow details from Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco jewelry. Milgrain, a fine beaded edge along the metal, appears on most of these settings. Others add filigree openwork, hand-engraved patterns on the band, or floral motifs around the center. Art Deco heart rings lean on straight lines, stepped shoulders and geometric halos.
Many designs frame the heart with a halo of lab-grown diamond accents, which makes the center look larger and keeps the heart outline crisp. A solitaire shows the heart on its own, often with a pavé or milgrain band. Some designs set side stones or build a three stone ring around the heart, and a few use bezel or cluster settings for a softer, rounded look.
A heart-shaped center shows its outline best when the two lobes are even and the point is protected by a prong or V-shaped tip. Colored centers suit the vintage look well: you can pick fancy blue, pink, yellow or green on most designs and black on some. Yellow and rose gold give a warm, antique tone, while platinum and white gold make milgrain and engraving read crisp and bright. Settings start under $200 and most cost between about $730 and $1,190; the price is for the setting, and the center is priced when you choose it.
