Buying guide
A pear combines a rounded end and a single point. The point is the most delicate part, so most pear settings guard it with a V-shaped prong, and bezel solitaires wrap the whole outline in metal for a smooth, protected edge. Pear centers are usually worn with the point toward the fingertip, which makes the finger look longer. Some designs set the center on a bypass band that curves around it, and a few are tension-style, appearing to hold the stone between the two ends of the band.
A plain band keeps all the attention on the center and shows the gold most clearly. Pave bands add a row of lab-grown diamond accents along the shank, and hidden halo designs tuck a ring of lab-grown diamond accents under the center, visible from the side. Twisted and split shank bands add movement, cathedral designs lift the center on arches of metal, and vintage designs bring milgrain, engraving and filigree. Many settings let you choose a band width of about 1.8 to 2.5 mm.
Every setting is made in white, yellow and rose gold, in 10K, 14K or 18K. White gold suits a colorless center, while yellow and rose gold add warmth. Most settings can also be made for a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some for a black center. Prices are for the setting only, starting under $450, with most between about $850 and $1,100; the center is priced when you choose it.
