Buying guide

Why the marquise suits a solitaire

The marquise is a long oval with pointed ends. For its weight it has one of the largest face-up areas of any shape, and it makes the finger look longer and slimmer. With no halo or side stones competing, a solitaire setting shows off that shape cleanly. The points are the most delicate part of the stone, so most marquise settings protect them with V-shaped prongs, and bezel designs wrap the whole outline in gold.

Band styles to choose from

  • Plain band: thin, rounded or flat, for the most classic look.
  • Pave band: about half the designs add lab-grown diamond accents along the shank.
  • Twisted, bypass and vintage: rope twists, swirling shanks, milgrain and engraving.
  • Hidden halo and cathedral: a ring of accents under the center seen from the side, or arches that lift the center.

Many designs also let you pick a band width, usually 1.8 to 2.5 mm.

Gold color and price

White gold makes a colorless center look brighter; yellow gold suits a vintage design or a fancy yellow center; rose gold flatters a pink center. Lower karats are harder; 18K has the richest color. The price shown is for the setting only, from under $450, with most settings about $870 to $1,110. Your center is priced when you choose it.
