Buying guide
Halo pendants surround a center lab-grown diamond with a ring of smaller ones, sometimes inside a bezel rim, for a bigger look from a modest center. Filigree pendants use open, lacy gold work that lets light through. Floral and cluster designs group round lab-grown diamonds into a flower or oval. Cross pendants come plain-framed, pave or floral.
Nearly every design has milgrain, a fine beaded edge that outlines the pendant the way older jewelry did. Most also use pave, small lab-grown diamonds set close together, so the outline sparkles as well as the center. If you like an art deco gold necklace, look at the halo pendants with emerald and princess cut centers, whose straight lines suit that period.
Nearly every design offers 1 carat total weight, many range from 0.5 to 2 carats, and some go up to 6 carats. Total weight is the combined weight of all the lab-grown diamonds in the pendant. Every design comes in 10K or 14K gold; a vintage 14K gold necklace has a deeper color, and 10K is slightly harder. Prices start from about $750, and most designs are between about $800 and $900 at their smallest option.
