Buying guide
A solitaire is a single stone with nothing competing for attention. On a gold necklace with a solitaire lab-grown diamond, the setting and bail are kept small so the lab-grown diamond does the work. Most designs hold the stone in prongs, which let in the most light. A few use a bezel rim that wraps the edge for protection and a smooth outline, and some designs suspend the stone in a tension setting.
The bail is the loop the chain passes through. A split bail or V bail grips the top of the stone, while a tall bar bail adds a little height above it.
Most designs offer 1 to 9 carats total weight, and a few also come in smaller sizes from 0.25 carat or in half-carat steps. Some designs let you pick D, E or F color and VVS1, VVS2 or VS1 clarity. 14K gold has more gold than 10K; 10K is slightly harder and costs less. Each gold solitaire pendant starts from about $625, and most are between about $800 and $850 at their smallest option.
