Buying guide
Pave is a row of small stones set close together, each held by tiny beads of metal, so the surface reads as one line of sparkle. On these rings the pave accents are lab-grown diamonds. Many designs keep the pave on the band alone, while others add a halo or double halo around the center, split the shank into two pave rows, or twist the band. A few use graduated pave that grows toward the center, or a channel-set baguette band.
The lab-grown ruby, emerald and sapphire on these rings have the same makeup and hardness as mined stones. The tanzanite, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, garnet, peridot and blue topaz are natural, treated gemstones. For daily wear, lab-grown ruby and sapphire are the hardest choices at 9 on the Mohs scale. Tanzanite, at about 6 to 7, is softer and is best kept away from hard knocks.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, and gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Band widths run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm on most designs, slim enough to keep the eye on the center stone. Prices start under $300, and most rings cost between about $750 and $1,050 at their smallest option.
