Buying guide
A solitaire is defined by its single center stone, but the band can still carry detail. Many of these rings add a line of lab-grown diamond pave along the band or shoulders, and a few hide a small halo under the center. Others keep a plain polished band. Bypass bands that wrap around the center, split shanks, twisted bands, floral and leaf heads, and a Celtic knot design round out the range.
The lab-grown ruby, emerald and sapphire here share the makeup and hardness of mined stones. The tanzanite, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, garnet, peridot and blue topaz are natural, treated gemstones. A solitaire leaves more of the stone exposed than a halo, so hardness matters: lab-grown ruby and sapphire rate 9 on the Mohs scale, while tanzanite and peridot are softer and need gentler wear.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, so a gemstone solitaire engagement ring can be delicate or bold. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and most bands are about 1.8 to 2.5 mm wide. Prices start under $300, and most rings cost between about $650 and $1,050 at their smallest option.
