Round sides keep the look classic, pear sides curve in toward the center and give a wider outline, and tapered baguettes or trillions add straight, geometric lines. For a ring worn every day, lab-grown sapphire and ruby are the hardest of these gems at 9 on the Mohs scale. Aquamarine, topaz and lab-grown emerald are around 7.5 to 8. Tanzanite, peridot, amethyst, citrine and garnet are softer and wear best with some care. White lab-grown diamond sides make any colored center look brighter.
