Buying guide
Filigree is metal worked into thin, lacy patterns of curls, scrolls and openings. On these rings it often sits in the gallery, the part under the center you see from the side, so the ring has detail at every angle. Some designs pair a filigree gallery with a three-row pave band and halo. A hidden halo design tucks lab-grown diamonds beneath the amethyst. Others trace leaves along a vine shank with a scalloped rim, or add milgrain and bezel-set shoulder accents for an older, hand-finished feel.
Amethyst is the purple form of quartz and the birthstone for February. At 7 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear with some care, though it can scratch against harder stones. Lighter lilac tones look delicate in fine metalwork, while deep violet stands out more against a busy filigree pattern. Keep the ring out of strong sun and heat, which can fade the color over time, and clean the openwork gently with a soft brush.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold is offered in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow and rose gold give the antique look most filigree is known for; white gold, platinum and silver read crisper. Prices start under $400, and most are between about $850 and $1,050 at their smallest option.
