Buying guide

What a split shank does

A split shank engagement ring splits the band into two strands near the top, and the strands open around the center. It adds width and detail at the center without a wider band all the way around, so the ring stays comfortable. It also makes the center look a little larger and gives more room for lab-grown diamond accents.

Styles to compare

  • Pave split shank: most designs set lab-grown diamond accents along one or both strands; some graduate them toward the center.
  • Halo and double halo: one or two rows of lab-grown diamond accents frame the center.
  • Solitaire: a plain or rope split shank keeps the attention on the center.
  • Bypass and twisted: the strands cross or turn as they meet the center for a softer line.

Center color and price

Most designs can also be made for a fancy color center in blue, pink, green or yellow, and some for a black center. You pick the center and its color in the next step. Some designs also offer band widths from about 1.8 to 2.8 mm. The prices shown are for the setting only, starting under $700, with most settings between about $1,000 and $1,450. The center is priced when you choose it.
