A yellow gold cathedral engagement ring lifts the center on arches of metal that rise from the band, like the arches of a cathedral. These settings take round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, marquise, radiant, princess, heart and, on most designs, asscher centers. Most are solitaires, and some add pave, channel set or vintage detail in 10K, 14K or 18K yellow gold.

Buying guide
In a cathedral setting the shoulders of the band sweep up to meet the head that holds the center. The arches support the prongs from below, so the center sits higher and looks larger from the side. The raised profile also leaves room under the center for light to enter. Because the center sits higher, check that a wedding band will sit the way you want next to it.
Most designs in this collection are cathedral solitaires with a plain band, from slim and tapered to split or open shoulders. Some add lab-grown diamond accents: pave on the shoulders, channel set stones along the band or a graduated pave band. A few have vintage, engraved, filigree or floral detail. Most designs can also be set for a fancy yellow, pink, blue or green center, and a few for a black center.
Settings start from about $500, and most are between about $1,000 and $1,150 in yellow gold. The price covers the setting only; the center is chosen and priced in the next step. Every design comes in 10K, 14K or 18K gold. 10K is the hardest wearing and lowest priced, 14K is the most common choice, and 18K has the deepest yellow tone.
