Buying guide

Picking a colored gemstone

Each gem keeps its own origin.

  • Lab-grown blue sapphire, pink sapphire, ruby and emerald.
  • Natural, treated: amethyst, garnet, citrine, peridot, aquamarine, blue topaz and tanzanite.

Many shoppers pick a birthstone, such as garnet for January, amethyst for February or lab-grown ruby for July. Warm stones like natural citrine and garnet or lab-grown ruby blend with yellow gold; cool ones like lab-grown blue sapphire and natural aquamarine and tanzanite stand out against it.

The solitaire basket stud

A basket setting holds the gem on prongs joined by a low rail, so the stone sits close to the lobe while light still reaches it from the sides. Round and cushion shapes look neat and compact. Oval, pear and marquise look longer on the ear, princess and emerald cuts add straight edges, and heart adds a playful outline.

Carat weight, karat and care

The studs come from 0.5 to 10 carats total weight for the pair. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K; 18K shows the deepest yellow. Lab-grown sapphire and ruby rate 9 on the Mohs scale, and softer stones such as tanzanite need a little more care. Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Prices start under $400.
