Buying guide

Why a halo suits an oval center

A halo is a border of small stones set around the center. An oval already looks long on the finger, and a halo follows its outline, adding width and sparkle so the center reads bigger than its carat weight. The halo also protects the edge of the center stone. A white gold oval halo engagement ring keeps the metal bright, so the accents and center blend into one shape.

Halo styles to compare

  • Pave halo: the most common style here, often with lab-grown diamond accents down the band.
  • Double halo: two rings of accents for the fullest look.
  • Vintage and milgrain: beaded edges, filigree and Art Deco details.
  • Split shank: the band divides near the center for an open, airy shape.
  • Bezel and cluster halos: accents in metal rims or small groups.

Centers, gold and price

Most designs can hold a colorless center or a fancy pink, blue, yellow or green center, and some are made for a black center. Every design comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white gold, and some let you pick a band width from about 1.8 to 3 mm. Settings start at about $625, and most are between about $875 and $1,100. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
