Buying guide
Many engagement rings have a center or halo that sits low or a head that is wider than the band. A straight wedding band then leaves a gap or pushes against the setting. A curved or contour band follows the outline of the engagement ring so both sit flush. Chevron bands form a V that points to the center, U-shaped bands wrap under round or oval heads, and open curved designs leave room for the center to sit between two tips.
Most designs are set with round lab-grown diamonds in a pavé or half eternity row, which adds sparkle without much height. Some use marquise, pear or princess cut lab-grown diamonds for a crown or two-stone look, and a few are plain gold with notches and waves. Vintage touches like milgrain and twisted wire appear on some styles.
A curved band is shaped for a particular head, so check the shape of your engagement ring before choosing. Most designs set with lab-grown diamonds offer 0.25 to 0.5 carats total weight, and a few go up to 1 carat. Most designs come in 10K, 14K or 18K white gold. Bands start from about $450, and most are between about $700 and $800 at their smallest option.
