Light That Catches the Eye

Sterling Silver Gemstone Earrings

These sterling silver gemstone earrings are solitaire basket studs you build around one colored stone. Pick the gem, then the shape: round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, pear, marquise or heart. Every pair is made in Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver, so the color of the stone does the talking. They make easy silver gem earrings for every day or a birthstone gift.

Buying guide

Lab-grown and natural gems

The colored gemstones here come from two sources, and each product page names its stone plainly.

  • Lab-grown ruby, emerald, and blue and pink sapphire, grown with the same makeup as the mined stones.
  • Natural, treated tanzanite, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, garnet, peridot and blue topaz.

Lab-grown gems give strong, even color at a gentle price. Natural gems suit anyone who wants a stone formed in the earth.

Choosing a gem for earrings

Earrings take few knocks, so every gem here wears well as a stud. Lab-grown ruby and sapphire are the hardest of the group, at 9 on the Mohs scale, with topaz, aquamarine and lab-grown emerald close behind. Tanzanite and peridot are softer, so store them apart from harder pieces. Many people choose by birth month: garnet for January, amethyst for February, aquamarine for March, lab-grown emerald for May, lab-grown ruby for July, peridot for August, lab-grown sapphire for September, and citrine, blue topaz or tanzanite for November and December.

Shape and setting

Each stone sits in a basket of prongs that lifts it toward the light and leaves the sides open. Round and cushion stones look soft and classic. Princess and emerald cuts look crisp and tailored. Oval, pear and marquise read a little longer on the ear, and a heart makes a sweet gift. Prices start under $175 a pair.
