Milgrain is a line of very small beads pressed into the metal along an edge: around a halo, down the sides of the band, or framing the center. It softens the outline of a ring and catches light in tiny points. Jewelers used it heavily in Edwardian and Art Deco rings, so it gives any setting an heirloom feel. Some designs use a double row of milgrain for a bolder line.
Many designs pair milgrain with pavé lab-grown diamond accents along the band, and a large share wrap the center in a halo. Others keep things simple with a solitaire head and a milgrain-edged band. Smaller groups add engraving, filigree openwork, floral shapes, bezel accents, three-stone layouts or graduated stones that grow toward the center. Band widths run from about 1.8 to 2.8 mm on the designs that list one.
Rose gold gets its pink tone from copper in the alloy, and the warm color suits the soft, beaded texture of milgrain. Every setting comes in 10K, 14K or 18K rose gold; lower karats are a touch pinker and harder, and 18K is richer in color. Most designs also take a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some take black. Settings start from about $600, and most are between about $950 and $1,300. That price is for the setting only; your center is chosen and priced in the next step.
