A bezel is a thin wall of metal that wraps around the edge of the center stone, in place of prongs. It protects the girdle from knocks, has nothing to catch on clothing or hair, and suits an active day. A full bezel circles the whole stone. A half bezel covers two sides and leaves the others open, so more light reaches the stone and the look is lighter.
A bezel shows more metal around the center than prongs do, so the metal color frames the stone. A rose gold bezel ring gives a warm pink outline that suits a white center and works well with fancy pink or yellow centers too. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. 10K and 14K are a little harder wearing, and 18K has a richer color.
Settings start from about $500, and most sit between about $1,100 and $1,600. That price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it. Most designs also take a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center.
