Buying guide

The gemstones you can choose

  • Lab-grown ruby, lab-grown blue sapphire, lab-grown pink sapphire and lab-grown emerald: grown with the same makeup as the mined stones.
  • Natural, treated amethyst, aquamarine, blue topaz, citrine, garnet, peridot and tanzanite.

Lab-grown ruby and sapphire rate 9 on the Mohs scale and are the toughest of the group. Tanzanite and peridot are softer, but studs take few knocks, so every stone here wears well as an earring.

The solitaire basket stud

Each stud holds one gemstone in a basket setting: prongs joined by a metal rail under the stone. The rail keeps the prongs steady and lets light reach the stone from the sides, and the low profile sits close to the earlobe for an easy daily fit.

Why platinum for gemstone studs

Platinum is a dense, naturally white metal that does not fade to yellow and needs no plating. Over time it takes on a soft satin patina, which a jeweler can polish back to a shine. It is also a common choice for sensitive ears. The white color frames every gem color, from red and green to blue and purple cleanly.

Choosing by color and birthstone

Many people choose by birth month: garnet for January, amethyst for February, aquamarine for March, lab-grown emerald for May, lab-grown ruby for July, peridot for August, lab-grown sapphire for September, citrine and blue topaz for November, and tanzanite for December. Prices start just under $1,000.
