Buying guide
Tanzanite is the December birthstone, prized for a blue that shifts toward violet as you turn it. Nearly all tanzanite on the market is heat-treated to bring out that blue, which is standard for the stone. It rates about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than many gems, so earrings are one of the best ways to wear it: they take far fewer knocks than a ring. Store the studs apart from harder stones and clean them with mild soapy water, never in an ultrasonic cleaner.
A pear cut is round at one end and pointed at the other. On a stud, it draws the eye slightly downward and makes pear tanzanite earrings look a touch longer than a round stone of the same weight. The basket setting uses joined prongs that hold the stone securely and let light in from the sides.
