Buying guide
Tanzanite comes from a single small mining area in Tanzania. Its color shifts between blue and violet depending on the light and the angle you view it from, and most tanzanite is heat-treated to bring out that blue-violet tone. It rates about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it does better in earrings than in a ring worn every day. Clean it with mild soap and warm water, and avoid ultrasonic cleaners.
A cushion cut is a square with rounded corners and broad facets. Its depth holds color well, so a cushion tanzanite shows a rich blue-violet across the face of the stone. The basket setting holds each gem on prongs joined by an open cage beneath, keeping the stud close to the ear while light enters from the sides.
Smaller sizes give a quiet hint of color; larger ones show more of tanzanite's depth and color shift.
