Buying guide

What milgrain is

Milgrain is a beaded edge pressed into the metal along the rim of a band, a halo or a bezel. It softens hard edges and catches light in small points, which gives a ring the look of early twentieth century jewelry. Milgrain is surface detail, so over many years of wear the beads can soften; a jeweler can refresh them when the ring is polished.

Styles in the range

  • Milgrain halo: a frame of lab-grown diamond accents around the moissanite, edged in beads, some with a hidden halo under the center.
  • Vintage solitaire: a single stone on an engraved or wide milgrain band.
  • Pave and stations: lab-grown diamond accents along the band, with marquise and square stations or bezel shoulder accents on some designs.
  • Pierced gallery and swirl: open metalwork under and around the center.

Size, metal and price

Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs scale and has more fire than most stones, so even modest sizes show strong flashes of color. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K; yellow and rose gold lean into the antique look, while white gold and platinum keep it bright. Band widths run about 1.8 to 2.5 mm. Prices start under $350, and most rings are between about $900 and $1,100.
