Filigree is decorative open metalwork: curls, scrolls and loops that leave small gaps in the metal. On a ring it usually sits in the gallery under the center, along the shoulders or on the band. It lets light through the setting and gives the ring an antique character without adding stones. Because the openwork has fine edges, give it a gentle clean with a soft brush and warm soapy water.
Every setting is made for a heart-shaped center, chosen in the next step, and nearly all also come in versions made for a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green heart, some for black. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Filigree looks warm and soft in yellow and rose gold and crisp in white gold, platinum or silver. Prices start under $250, and most settings are between about $800 and $1,100, for the setting only. The center is priced when you choose it.
