Buying guide
These are new rings made in an antique style. Most use pave lab-grown diamond accents and many have milgrain, the beaded metal edge seen on older jewelry. Some frame the lab-grown ruby in a halo or hidden halo, some add filigree or engraved leaf sides, and a few keep it as a solitaire with bezel-set lab-grown diamond accents or a swirl shape.
A lab-grown ruby has the same chemistry, hardness and crystal structure as a natural ruby and costs far less at the same size and color. At 9 on the Mohs scale, lab-grown ruby is one of the hardest gems, so a vintage gold lab-grown ruby ring holds up well to daily wear.
Every design comes in round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald cut, pear, marquise or heart, and every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Yellow and rose gold warm the red of the lab-grown ruby, and white gold gives it a sharper contrast. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Rings start at about $740, and most start between about $900 and $1,090.
