Buying guide

What a cluster ring is

A cluster ring groups many small stones around or beside the center so the top reads as one larger shape. Here the lab-grown ruby sits inside lab-grown diamond accents: a floral double halo, a star-shaped floral halo with a pave band, or a graduated cluster with stones that step down in size around an open basket. The extra stones make the top look wider than the center alone, and the open designs let light reach the stone.

Lab-grown ruby

A lab-grown ruby has the same chemistry, hardness and crystal structure as a natural ruby and costs far less at the same size and color. At 9 on the Mohs scale, lab-grown ruby holds up well to daily wear, and the lab-grown diamonds around it add sparkle beside the red.

Shape, carat, gold and price

Every design comes in round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald cut, pear, marquise or heart, and every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Yellow and rose gold warm the red of the lab-grown ruby, and white gold blends with the lab-grown diamond cluster. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Rings start at about $970.
