Buying guide
Lab-grown ruby is a red variety of corundum and rates 9 on the Mohs scale, one of the hardest gems used in jewelry. That makes it a sound choice for a ring worn every day. A lab-grown ruby has the same chemistry and hardness as a natural ruby and is grown under controlled conditions rather than mined. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
Every design comes in eight shapes. Round and cushion stones show the most sparkle, oval and pear shapes make the finger look longer, and the emerald cut shows deep, even color through its step facets. More than half the designs carry a pavé band of lab-grown diamond accents that frames the red. Others keep a plain band, or add a split shank, a twisted or floral band, a bypass curve or a hidden halo. Most bands are about 1.8 to 2.5 mm wide.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Choose 10K, 14K or 18K in yellow, white or rose gold. Yellow and rose gold warm the red, and white gold makes it look brighter and cooler. Prices include the lab-grown ruby and start at about $575 at the smallest option, and most rings begin between about $875 and $1,050.
