Buying guide

Choosing a gemstone

The colored gemstones here come in two groups. Lab-grown ruby, blue sapphire, pink sapphire and emerald have the same makeup as the mined gems; lab-grown ruby and sapphire are among the hardest gems, so they suit studs worn every day. Tanzanite, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, garnet, peridot and blue topaz are natural, treated stones. They are softer, so they last best with some care. Many people choose by birthstone: garnet for January, amethyst for February, aquamarine for March, lab-grown emerald for May, lab-grown ruby for July, peridot for August, lab-grown sapphire for September, citrine for November, and tanzanite or blue topaz for December.

Picking a shape

  • Round, cushion and princess: compact and classic, easy to wear daily.
  • Oval, pear and marquise: longer shapes that look bigger for their weight.
  • Emerald cut: clean, stepped facets that show off color.
  • Heart: a playful choice for gold gem stud earrings.

Size, gold and the basket setting

On the product page you pick from 0.5 to 10 carats total weight for the pair. A basket setting holds each stone in a small open cup of prongs, which lets in light and keeps the stud close to the ear. Yellow gold warms reds and yellows, white gold makes blues and greens look cooler, and rose gold softens pinks and purples. Prices start under $400.
